Precious Blood Hospital (Caritas) Information

Precious Blood Hospital is a private Catholic hospital located on Castle Peak Road, Sham Shui Po, Kowloon, and founded by the Sisters of the Precious Blood in 1937. Caritas group took charge of its management since 1993, Caritas then manage two private hospitals, another is Canossa Hospital located in Hong Kong Island.

Precious Blood Hospital is composed of three wings, including first two built in the late 1930s, and the new wing opened in 1975. Precious Blood Hospital with over 180 beds currently offers obstetric service and inpatient service. The obstetric service was stopped due to the declining birth rate in the mid-1990s, and reopened since 2009. Besides, Precious Blood Hospital also offers several body checking and paramedical services, including endoscopy, clinical pathology laboratory, etc. Out-Patient Department include Specialist Out-Patient Department, General Out-Patient Department and Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic.

Precious Blood Hospital founded by the Precious Blood Sisters, the full name is the Precious Blood Sisters of Jesus of China,formed by Canossian Daughters of Charity in 1922. Mainly engaged in social work, education and health care in Hong Kong etc. The first religious seminary was built in Shau Kei Wan. With increasing need,Precious Blood Convent and Precious Blood Hospital was built in Un Chau Street, Sham Shui Po, in 1937. At that time the entire Kowloon Peninsula has only one public hospital - in Yau Ma Tei, Kwong Wah Hospital. The developed of this hospital provide medical services to the residents of the northern part of Kowloon was to relieve the pressure on the Kwong Wah Hospital.

At April 1993, Caritas Hong Kong take over Precious Blood Hospital. It was founded by the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong in 1953. After war, the goal of Caritas is to provide relief and rehabilitation services to the disadvantaged. Since then, Caritas has been providing a number of areas of social services, including health, education, community development, as well as Caritas Hospital in 1964 in Cheung Sha Wan, providing acute and general services. In 1991, it joined the network of the Hospital Authority serving the northwest residents in Kowloon.

After Caritas took over Precious Blood Hospital, hospital was renamed as Precious Blood Hospital (Caritas), becoming the second Caritas Hong Kong's private hospitals (first one is Canossa Hospital from June 1991 onwards).

This two hospitals now providing services to residents in Hong Kong inland and Kowloon.
