Hong Kong City Hall Information

City Hall is situated in Edinburgh Place Central, which is the first civic service complex in Hong Kong. Its history can be traced back to 1860s. Current City Hall was open in 1962, and managned by Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) at present.

City Hall was composed by High Block, Low Block and Memorial garden. Low block contains concert Hall, theatre, exhibition hall, performing arts shop and URBTIX box office. high block contains public library, marriage registry, recital hall, committee room, exhibition gallery. Memorial Garden with a Shrine was built in memory of the glorious dead in the World War II.

To promote the arts in the community, LCSD had started the Venue Partnership Scheme since April 2009. The present partners are Hong Kong Repertory Theatre and Hong Kong Sinfonietta.

More about Hong Kong City Hall

The first city hall in Hong Kong was built by public contributions in 1860s, which was a magnificent renaissance style building situated in Queens Road Central.

The current city hall was opened in March 1962, composed by two independent buildings (High Block & Low Block) with clean lines and stark geometric forms. The style was very modern and creative in 1950s, which highly affect the later on architecture style.

City Hall provides important venue for perforing arts, ceremonies and celebrations, including governors swearing and large culture events. Besides, City Hall Library is the first public library in HK. Hong Kong Museum, Hong Kong Museum of Art were also located in City Hall, and moved out since the saturation of facilities. Moreover, the City Hall Marriage Registry is the most popular amongst marriage registries in Hong Kong, the memorial garden is also the popular place of photography for the newly weds.

1,434-seat Concert hall located in Low Block is designed with sound canopy layout. It is designed as a symphony hall and best suited for performance of music acoustically and in other respects. However, hires can also remove seats to extent the stage, or draw the overhead sounding boards upward to for the conversion into a "picture frame" stage with a timber proscenium arch. As the high-standard facility, Concert Halls has a high usage rate, which is often used by well-known orchestras and virtuoso for performance.

Theatre is a traditional proscenium designed theatre located in Low Block, with an orchestra pit and 463 seats. It is used for performing drama, chamber music recitals and cinema shows in general. Exhibition Hall located on 1/F of Low Block provides 590 sq.m exhibition venue, which can perform two programme at the same time at most. It is a popular venue for visual arts exhibitions, ceremonies, reception parties and commercial exhibitions.

Recital hall located on 8/F of High Block provides 111 seats with a semi-circular design, suitable for smaller scale music, dance performances or holding lectures. Otherwise, Exhibition Gallery and Committee Rooms are located on 7/F of High Block, providing venue for visual arts exhibition, meetings, seminars or interest classes. Exhibition Gallery provides 260 sq.m. area; 2 Committee rooms can accommodate up to 40 persons respectively.
